Narrative
A year ago, I was told by my
grandparents from New York that I would be going on a Disney cruise in the
summer of 2013. My sister and my mom would join me on the trip as well. Our
grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins from New York would join us on the
cruise as well. The dates that we would be on our vacation were June 29th
to July 4th. We were so excited that we would be traveling to Orlando,
Florida, then we would be staying in a Walt Disney World Resort called Port
Orleans-Riverside, and lastly, boarding the Disney Dream cruise ship for a four day cruise. We knew that it was a year
away, but we were just so excited that we told everyone that we were going on a
cruise, and that was going to be paid in full by our grandparents. Months
passed and then we realized that the cruise was only a few days away. When it
was June 29th, our vacation was about to begin.
It is June 29th, 2013. We
left the house in the morning at 10:15am to head to the Columbus Airport. This
was the first time that my sister and I would be flying in a plane. I was
nervous the entire time while we were waiting for the plane to take us to
Orlando. When the plane landed and we got on the plane, I could feel the power
of the planes four engines. It was like I was about to ride the Top Thrill
Dragster at Cedar Point, the anticipation of how much power the Top Thrill
Dragster has and the power of the airplane. It was around 4:00pm when we landed
in Orlando. We found our bus to take us to our resort in Walt Disney World. It
was called Port Orleans-Riverside. It had the feel that I was in Louisiana. It
was hot and humid, just like in the south. It had small boats to take tours of
the resort and the great southern food. I tried grits for our dinner and it was
really good. It had a spicy kick to it as well. We only stayed at the resort
for one night, because the next day, we would head to our ship to start our
cruise.
It is June 30th, we got
on our bus to take us to Port Canaveral, where our ship was being docked at. We
got there and the ship looked amazing. It had a black hull, with yellow lines,
and a white color on the main decks. We got inside the port and we got our Key
to the World Cards. We would use these cards instead of money and credit cards
to make transactions. We left port at 4:30 and we got ready for dinner. The
Disney Dream had four restaurants on
board. Our first restaurant was called the Animators Palate. The room was
filled with sketches from the Disney/Pixar movies. It felt like I was in one of
the artist’s sketch rooms, watching him or her draw sketches for the animators
to bring them to life. After dinner, we explored the ship and then went back to
our stateroom to rest for the next day.
It is July 1st, and we
arrived in Nassau, Bahamas. It was very humid and sticky in Nassau. We
disembarked from the ship to walk around in the city. It wasn’t very clean in
the city. People wanted to sell you items, braid your hair, or give your tours
around the city. We just got t-shirts and then left to head back to the ship.
While we waited to leave Nassau, we went on a tube slide that was on the ship.
It was called the Aqua Duck. It was fun, and it had drops that made my stomach
come up to my throat. For dinner, we ate at Enchanted Garden, it had a theme
that the grass was always green and the flowers would always have bright
colors. The next, we would arrive on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.
It is July 3rd, and we
are now on Disney’s Private Island, Castaway Cay. It is pronounced, Key, not
Cay. The island was big and it had a water slide area and huge beaches. This
was also my first time tasting saltwater, it was very salty and it stinged. The
sand was not hot on our feet, which was good. We stayed on the island until
late in the afternoon before we disembarked to head back to Port Canaveral. When
we got back to the ship the entire ship was decorated into a pirate themed
night. We were treated to a play on deck 11 and then a spectacular fireworks
show. The colors were so bright, that it felt like it was made with Disney magic.
It is July 4th, and we are just traveling back to Port Canaveral at
sea. I was sad that it was the last day to be on the ship. We did putt-putt,
the Aqua Duck and just relaxed. After the day is done, we would be back in
Florida to head back to the airport and to head back home.
Those five days were the best days of my life. I never
thought that I would be flying to Orlando, Florida. Going to a Walt Disney
World Resort, and then going on a four day cruise aboard the Disney Dream. It is still in my memory, even
when it happened over two months ago. I will never forget my first airplane
ride and cruise. It was a thrill of a lifetime, seeing a beautiful cruise ship,
traveling to a different state and country, and to enjoy time with family. It was
priceless.
